Full text searching from the SEC
EDGAR, SEC’s electronic filing system for company and financial reports, has been working out.
The SEC developed its Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system to facilitiate electronic access to company filings — annual reports (10K), quarterly reports (10Q), proxy announcements (14A), registrations, notifications, ownership reports, initial public offerings, and any of the other zillion or so forms collected by the Securities and Exchange Commision.
But it’s only recently that SEC provided the capability for full text searching of the EDGAR reports.
And it’s not just public companies reporting either. You might be surprised at what’s available on foreign firms, private companies, and financial services.
In typical government fashion, the search interface is clumsy, and the results difficult to sort though (Guys….just ask Google to design it, will ya?).
But the EDGAR Advanced Search feature might help a bit, so look for it on their main search page. I used Advanced Search to search for “Rupert Murdoch” and came back with thousands of hits. There’s News Corp, of course, but Rupert’s name is also associated with: Ruby Newco, Dow Jones Co, British Sky Broadcasting, Dynamic Leisure Corp, Partners Inc, News America, Metromedia International Group, Gemstar TV Guide International, Catalina Marketing Corp, Ishares Inc, and China Netcom.
And that’s not all…there are also more funds and trusts than you can shake a billion at, including MTB, Nuveen, Powershares ETF, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, American Beacon, Europacific Growth Fund, Metlife, Schwab, Franklin Templeton, Allianz, and Legg Mason. Even AARP Portfolios is included — I guess Mr. Murdoch is planning for retirement.
All in all, the richness of EDGAR’s database, along with the new capability for full text searching, make it an easy choice for the #2 site in XooxleAnswers’ list of Top Ten Business Research Tools for 2012.
